designafairs, a product design consultancy based in Mountain View, CA, worked with Grindmaster to develop a new single-cup coffee brewer for the consumer market. The Grindmaster Consumer Pod-Based Brewer uses a digitally-controlled process that adjusts temperature and pressure to force steam through grounds at the rate that produces the optimal flavor and specified strength for a single cup. designafairs created a product with a look suggestive of traditional home coffeemakers, but with a more cohesive form and clean, graceful curves reminiscent of a vase or carafe. The simple interface utilizes only three controls: power-on, strength dial, and brew-cup button. The design intentionally avoids appearing trendy or technical, instead attracting through familiar, comfortable color and material selection, quality fit and finish, and sophisticated form.
