Summit ID -- Concept PDA

As part of a project to envision a concept PDA of 5-7 years away for MobilePC Magazine, San Francisco's Summit ID created a device that constantly transforms itself through interaction with a wide range of accessories. According to Scott Summit, Principal of Summit ID, "This device will provide connectivity to the world around, acting as an interpreter and universal interface to an increasingly addressable environment."

Summit's project was grounded on four general assumptions regarding next-generation mobile technology:
* Vast improvements in bandwidth, and storage capacity in handheld devices
* Continued miniaturization of functions such as global location technology, media and storage
* Breakthroughs in power supply and efficient energy consumption
* Great advances in security and user identification

The basic concept is that the main component, refered to as the Core, delivers an enourmous range of services through connections to other items in the user's environment. These can include desktop PCs, phones, car stereos, TVs, remote storage devices, checkout scanners and more. The results of the project have been published in the January issue of the magazine.
