Stuart Karten Design -- Snap Saver
The Snap-Saver storage system, designed by Los Angeles-based Stuart Karten Design, was named Best in Category at the 2005 Housewares Design Awards, in the Countertop Kitchenware category.
Snap-Saver, a food storage system that keeps bowls and lids together with a patented snap, is the brainchild of Kate Adams, a busy mother of three who had an inspired moment during a frustrating search for a container and lid to store her family's leftovers. Sitting on her kitchen floor amid a mess of mismatched lids and bowls, Adams developed the idea to connect the two.
She approached Stuart Karten Design with this brainstorm and left it to the design team to engineer a functional way to implement her idea and create an iconic image for her new company. The team at SKD was impressed by Adams' idea and tempted by the opportunity to advance a staid industry and a product that had essentially remained the same for the 50-plus years since its first introduction.
The design solution centers, naturally, on the Snap. The design team looked to create an intuitive, easy to use snap feature while also developing a design language that could distinguish this new product in a crowded market. The resulting product snaps lids to bowls and to each other and allows all sizes to stack neatly into each other.
