Checkland Kindleysides -- SONY PSP Display

Checkland Kindleysides, located in Leicestershire, UK, is a multidisciplinary design firm specializing in branding and identity, and retail, interior, and environmental design. Their extensive client list includes Audi, Ben Sherman, Vodafone, Levi's, and Rolls-Royce. A recent commission by SONY Computer Entertainment Europe called for a promotional display that encourages users to sample and experience the popular Sony PSP (PlayStation Portable), intended for deployment at trade shows, launch events and public events outside of the retail environment.

Checkland Kindleysides opted for a crisp minimal aesthetic, enveloping the PSP device within a pure white concave dish seamlessly set in a polished black sphere. Several variations of the display were created in order to accommodate various interactive situations. The Atlas unit (shown right) is a double-sided freestanding sphere set atop an organic droplet-shaped based, holding two PSP's. The Stackerball unit (not shown) is comprised of several spheres stacked, housing two to six PSP's. The Porta-ball unit (shown left) is a portable display intended for use on a bar or table top, or as the user is seated. As the popularity of portable gaming increases, more people are spending hours of their valuable time playing video games outside of the home as opposed to inside, stationary, in front of the telly. Enhancing this phenomenon, each display style promotes the PSP's appealing portability feature by creating a simple, yet attractive backdrop to one of the most advanced and revered portable gaming systems available today.
