Ignite -- Fiore

Garbage on the street is an all too familiar dilemma here in NYC, however it looks as if Chicago, one of this nation's cleanest cities, has taken some creative initiative to do something about it. The AIA of Chicago's Young Architects sponsored a project seeking a sound ecological solution for recycling in public spaces. Ignite, a Chicago based industrial design firm, proposed a simple system intended to accommodate and benefit any major city. Fiore (flower) combines versatile form, adaptive modularity, and intuitive interaction, resulting in an effective public recycling system that involves the community to later yield optimal results.

Fiore's centered planters are permanently attached to the ground with two moveable bins on each side. The system's slim shape is ideal for the cramped spaces between curbs and sidewalks. If the area receives higher than normal traffic, an additional piece is added to the center for increased capacity. The bins slide apart for quick and easy removal and replacement of trash bags. Funding for installation is also addressed in the Fiore concept. Each unit is sponsored by a local business that assumes full responsibility of the upkeep of the station in return for their name placement on the planter portion of the sponsored station, showing their support for the city's recycling efforts.
