Redstr Collective -- Alma Fortune cups & saucers

Redstr Collective, a.k.a. Christine Warren and Alex Valich, is at it again, just in time for NYC Design week. The Brooklyn design duo's Alma Fortune cups and saucers allude to traditional Turkish coffee fortune telling within a context of contemporary American aesthetics and culture. Much like reading tea leaves or dregs of wine, Turkish coffee fortune telling incorporates the interpretation of various symbols found in the collective consciousness on overturned cups and their respective saucers adorned with streaks of grinds. Redstr has replaced a temporary and repetitious ritual with permanence, replacing coffee grinds with ground Limoges porcelain combined with pigment. The end result directly mimics the aesthetic vernacular that coffee grinds would produce, yet is set as a reference and acts as a decorative element with depth. The user studies an included symbol guide to interpret their own unique cup and saucer set. Each set is made independently, ensuring no duplicate patterns or fortunes. Alma Fortune cups and saucers are currently available as limited editions.
