Antenna Design and MTA/NYC Transit -- Help Point Intercom

NYC-based hi-tech design studio Antenna Design's Help Point Intercom communications system was developed in conjunction with the city's Metropolitan Transit Authority, resulting in a Bronze win at this years IDEA Awards. Subway security is a concern that has and always will call for improvements and innovations, given the authorities actually decide to take drastic and much-needed measures to ensure passenger safety. The Help Point Intercom (HPI) concept stems from recent inflated MTA security concerns and aims to provide live assistance for both emergency situations and real-time transit information. A microphone, speaker, red emergency call button and green information call button are intuitively placed and aid the user in making quick connections. To further enhance security and discourage tampering, each HPI is equipped with a built-in video camera that supplies a live video image of the user to the call center.

The approachable vertical unit is easy to spot in a station environment, and at the same time, manages to add a (much needed) subtle futuristic element to NYC's "classic" subway aesthetic without appearing peculiar or out of place. Antenna's design successfully integrates a working security system, attractive ambient light fixture, and kiosk-like accessibility, ideal for the wide range of functions that the MTA wishes to implement within HPI units. HPI's modular design accommodates wall-mounting, column-mounting, or freestanding configurations. The units are ADA compliant, extremely durable and vandal-proof, easy to clean and maintain, and feature high contrast, large type labels with Braille.
