Designer David Shaw of San Francisco's Metaform Product Development has teamed up with Chris Frank and Mark Stanton of Sun Microsystems' User Centered Design Group in the development and release of the Sun Ray 270 Virtual Display Client. The design and functionality keeps with Sun's founding vision, "The Network is the Computer," as well as their commitment to eco-responsibility. Sun Ray's application is ideal for network-intensive offices and space-constrained environments such as call centers, health care offices, financial workplaces, service providers, and educational institutions.

The Sun Ray 270 is a display device with applications running on a server elsewhere and the state of the user's session is independent of the display. The system utilizes Smartcards, allowing users the flexibility and convenience to initiate a personalized session from any Sun Ray unit. The stateless nature of Sun Ray clients enables complete session mobility, improves workflow, and helps ensure the protection of data. Sun Rays do not require internal hard drives or fans, and therefore use a fraction of the power required for PC's. Unlike frequently replaced PC's with limited life spans, Sun Rays are maintained and upgraded remotely, significantly prolonging replacement periods and making them super eco-friendly in this era of e-waste. Sun Ray's simple design and thin profile works well in any office environment, taking up minimal desk space while upholding a modern, unified aesthetic. This product is RoHS compliant and was designed, engineered, tooled and brought to market in only 7 months through a concerted team effort between Metaform, Sun Microsystems, and manufacturing suppliers in Asia.
