Ignition -- TI Gaming Projectors

Ignition, an international design and product development firm, recently teamed up with Guildhall, the video game development program at Southern Methodist University (SMU), and Texas Instrument (TI) in a $50,000 scholarship contest to foster young talent. The SMU students were given the task to design a portable, video game projector with the most devout gamer in mind. The only requirements were that they utilize TI's DLP technology--an optical semiconductor that reflects digital images with the use of micromirrors--and that they ignore the mechanical constraints of functional projectors.

In the end, three designs were chosen and handed over to TI's Front Projection engineers to be turned into working prototypes. The prototypes were displayed at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), and only one design came out the winner--Trisha Swanson's "Ball" projector. The other finalists were Dane Munkholm, who received a $9000 scholarship for his "Tube" design, and Graden "Troy" McCool, whose "Tower" design brought him a $5,000 Scholarship.

Since their release at CES, the three designs have generated significant interest from DLP Product's manufacturing partners. TI expects the projectors, or those similar to them, to hit the market in late 2008.
