What is Xlab?
Xlab is the event where technology, place and design intersect. (SEGD's fast-growing tech-focused experiential design conference is now a part of New York Digital Signage Week. )
Why Xlab?
Because Xlab brings together the designers, thinkers and makers who are transforming the landscape of experience design and influencing our future through the use of technology, from connected data and wearables, to enhancing interaction with the environments we live, work, travel and play in. It's an engaging and inspiring exploration, which will open new dialogues and change the way we think about design and the future.
The day-long conference on November 5th will explore five major topics:
Technology is enabling cities to become more open and efficient, and providing new ways for people to connect with each other and experience the places where they live, work, and play. But it takes more than just cool stuff to make transformations possible. Leadership, vision, and of course capital make innovation truly possible. The models being pioneered now will not only transform the way the city works, but will inspire others to look more closely at what they can do too.
The task of transforming cities has required a complete rethink of the way businesses are organized to serve and solve these new problems. The new challenges require a hybrid of design thinking and technology innovation. The digital paradigm shift is a golden opportunity for business leaders and entrepreneurs looking to capitalize on the next wave of urban innovation and experience centers.
Retail continues to undergo reinvention due to technology. Brick and mortar has come to mean another type of experience different from device and online shopping, and is now the epicenter of mass adoption of new types of technology to track, analyze, respond to customer's needs (and retailers' goals) in a responsive fashion.
Connecting technology to people's bodies is moving beyond singular devices to connected ecosystems of wearables. By integrating technology into clothing and wearable items, new kinds of interfaces are created that can respond to users environments and to other users. Wearables come in a variety of forms, from advanced devices such as watches to low-tech sensors that can be hacked and fused to everyday objects artfully.
Public spaces provide a venue for experimentation, artful interpretation, and surprises as varied as the users they serve. How is technology being used to create the unexpected, incite interaction, and truly transform the "in-between" spaces via true placemaking?
On November 6th, a series of tours and workshops will round out the event.
