Presented in conjunction with Global Citizen: The Architecture of Moshe Safdie, Living Cities will examine how nature is driving today's most innovative ideas in architecture and urbanism. In contrast to traditional urban parks, many new projects fuse landscape, infrastructure and building to produce integrated responses that humanize heavily populated cities and potentially accommodate climate change. Moderator Donald Albrecht, guest curator of Global Citizen, will introduce this concept in relation to Safdie's 50-year career.
He will be joined by a panel of contemporary architects, including National Academicians Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi, founders of Weiss/Manfredi; Chris Reed, founding Principal, STOSS; and Mary Margaret Jones, FASLA, FAAR, President/Senior Principal of Hargreaves Associates.
Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi are the architects of the Seattle Art Museum's Olympic Sculpture Park, which integrates art, architecture, and ecology in a new model for waterfront development. Weiss/Manfredi recently won a national competition with OLIN to redesign the Sylvan Theater, an outdoor amphitheater at the Washington Monument.
Chris Reed is the founding principal of Stoss. His innovative, hybridized approach to public space has been recognized internationally, and he has been invited to participate in competitions and installations in the United States, Canada, Europe, Israel, the Middle East, Taiwan, and China. He is currently Associate Professor in Practice of Landscape Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
