The Design Award Halle mediates between business and design, raising awareness to excellent design and creating an incentive for young designers to present their work to a wider audience. The prize is awarded every three years—it recognizes outstanding design products, ideas and concepts. The winners are selected by a high profile jury of experts. Every year, the international competition has a new theme.
This year's theme is "time," a theme of current and global significance that poses an environmental, economic, ethical and social point of many interesting theoretical design questions.
Time was once structured thorough constantly recurring phenomena such as the course of the seasons and the alternation between day and night. Measurement systems such as calendars, schedules and clocks then replaced the natural systems. They regulated the concept of time and helped form the accelerated timing of industrialization. The transformation of these systems to digital structures has a new result.
Time is now one one of the scarcest and most valuable intangible assets. At the same time, we combine time with concrete objects and spaces that can become bearers of remembrance for us. We are looking for designs that deal with the issue of time—be it product-oriented or process-oriented.
