NOTES
The International CES is heralded as the world's largest consumer technology event, drawing more than 2,400 exhibitors from over 110 different countries. Overwhelming in scale, exhibit design, and sheer volume of visitors, attendees spend as much energy worrying about what they're missing as what they're seeing. And let us assure you, given the scope of the exhibition there is lots to miss.

The event has morphed over the last few years from a show of stereos and TVs into a much more comprehensive review of state-of-the-art technology, as the notion of what constitutes "consumer electronics" has expanded and grown more sohisticated. Another aspect of the show is to serve as a leading indicator of trends in technology, design and brand development, expecially among large, established players such as Motorola and Microsoft.

Given the confluence of design, technology and Las Vegas, the show is enough to make a designer's head spin. Repeatedly. But since we can't all make it to the show, we've collected a few snapshots of standout items to share.

WHERIFY
Wherifone - GPS Locator Phone
A super cheap low cost mobile phone specifically for children & grandparents, this handset holds 5 pre-programmed numbers for one-touch dialing and a 911 panic button. More interesting or scary are the Big Brother GPS capabilities, over a telephone or via the web you can pinpoint the exact location of the handset which can be displayed on both a street map and satellite arial shot. Set your preferences to update the position every 15 minutes and you can view the location history.

BOARD BUG

Remote Controlled Robot
Deep in the back end of the south hall where you have to work really hard to understand what some people are actually exhibiting, I came across this pretty funky remote control robot that had some serious dance moves. They've certainly come a long way since the Omnibot I craved for in the mid 80's.

THE MENS ROOM
Las Vegas Living
A little bit of vegas found its way into the CES.

DIGITAL LIFESTYLES
Hip-E Teen Computer
"This is not your parents computer" - Someone dumped a lot of cash on market research and branding to target the lucrative digital teen market. This modular system has a built-in web cam with a removable mobile, MP3 player and beatbox. Without getting to cynical about the customizable clip on skin, the MP3 play which also works as an external drive plugs into the removable speakers creating a portable stereo. Its certainly no boombox but the idea is cool.
