GET THE FULL BRIEF HERE...

Core77 has joined forces with Popular Science, the world's largest science magazine, to periodically challenge industrial designers to incorporate cutting-edge technology and science into design solutions that address everyday problems and spot emerging opportunities. Each challenge will have a single theme, a brief, a deadline, and a chance for winners to have their designs published in Popular Science magazine and on the PopSci.com and Core77 Websites. In addition, there is a $500 prize or technology prize of similar value (at minimum).

When will the next challenge be?
We plan on doing this 4 or 5 times a year. You can check back periodically for specifics or register and receive announcements via email.

Who are the judges?
Judges are staff members of Core 77 and Popular Science.

Am I giving away my idea by entering?
No. Intellectual property rights will remain with the designer, although Popular Science retains the nonexclusive right to republish any winning design in a future issue, a compilation article, or in a book or Website.

Can I repurpose my old projects for this?
No, please don't. Work should be original for the challenge, or a significant modification and extension of work already done.

What will my registration information be used for?
The information you provide during registration will allow us to remind you of approaching deadlines, to announce the upcoming challenges and to contact you if you win; it will not be used for any other purposes.

Why are you doing this?
Three reasons.
- This is a unique opportunity for us to help designers get exposure. Popular Science has a circulation roughly equal to that of all the design-specific publications in the world, combined.
- We want to nurture the blue-sky side of our field, the business side is doing fine on its own – these challenges are designed to showcase our field's conceptual prowess.
- Popular Science is a great publication for designers, reading it will benefit your education/practice. Having an additional reason to pick up a copy is a good thing.

An Inspirational Message
from Your Coach,
Corejr.
This is important. This is why you became a designer.

Think back to when you started down this path. You wanted to get your ideas out there. You wanted to make things better.

To express yourself.
To improve the world.

This is unique. The challenges we issue here are broad, they allow you to fit them into your world view. This isn't constrained to addressing business needs. It is open.

You must believe in the power of the idea. The fact that it wants to be free. That design's true value to the world is 10% persperation and 90% inspiration. Set your ideas free and watch them ignite in the minds of others.

Preempt the mundane use of technology. Co-opt the innovative. Define the future.

This is a venue to preach the value of design through example. It is an opportunity for you to get your work in front on millions of people. A chance to demonstrate very concretely what designers do. Problem solving, visualization, blowing minds. Applying art and culture to new technology, innovating. This is about idea, about forward thinking.
