Core77 Releases Results of International Heavyweight Design Championship, 2000!

NYC, New York - January 8, 2001 - Core77, the design resource network, announces complete web coverage of its International Heavyweight Design Championship, 2000. From hundreds of conceptual product designs, a panel of independent judges chose their favorites. Plans, descriptions, sketches, and photographs of the survivors are on-line for full public viewing and voting at: http://www.core77.com/competition2000

"This design competition is organized to provide an outlet for the recognition of new creative design around the world," says Stuart Constantine, of Coroflot.com - the design employment website and sponsor of the event. "The contest truly encourages young designers and students to submit new and exciting projects for international critique."

According to Gareth Branwyn, multi-published author and one of the competition's judges, "Designers can take a forward role in helping to create smart ecotech - a 21st Century lifestyle that has minimal negative impact on the planet." He feels many of these entries are "conceptually exciting" and "a refreshing way of rethinking age-old technology."

The winner Bulk, a holographic clothing system transmitted via aromas, and other finalists reflect a futuristic fashion design sense, combining the physical body, nanotechnology, chemistry and even minor surgery!

Core77's annual battle entices designers from all over the world to come forth with conceptual products that break from old standards and grow with new technology. Competition is brutal - hundreds of students, corporate and independent designers entered the ring - and the group of judges select only one champion, with a handful of contenders left over.

This year's panel of judges were Gareth Branwyn, Ayse Birsel, Alberto Gaitán and Nzomo. Projects were determined to be conceptual if the designer's intent was to convey an abstract idea that explores the potential of design and technology. They were then rated using an agreed rubric. Now, the internet public will be able to take part in this process.

The top entries have full files for view at http://www.core77.com/competition2000. In addition, the champion and 10 final round contenders have dossiers which may be voted on for the next 8 weeks. The votes will be tallied and a People's Choice Award announced later this year. This should surely set the scene for the next competition, to decide the first Design Heavyweight of the new millennium.
