This is a new method of wheelchair propulsion that disengages the rim from the wheel. The offset cam allows for an easier way to apply energy to the wheels, enabling use of multiple gears for different speeds and terrains.

This product addresses one of the most direct personal needs, that of individual mobility. By separating and elevating the power transmission of the wheelchair, Eccentric allows the user to exert less effort for a greater result. In addition, the location of the offset wheel keeps it away from the ground and thereby free of the dirt and moisture that would otherwise be transmitted to the user's hands and arms repeatedly.

Gavin Ivester: "Eccentric solves an old problem in a way that doesn't require a lot of re-training. My favorite feature is the ability to add gearing to the wheelchair: imagine being able to upshift and really get moving when you have a long stretch to cover. Of course it might raise a question or two about stability and braking, but being able to go too fast is always a nice problem to have to solve."

Bruce Nussbaum: "This is a terrific redesign of an old, but critical, product. The simple but very functional changes make the wheelchair easier, faster and cleaner for people. This should have happened decades ago. It took a designer to take the big leap-ask someone sitting in a wheelchair how to improve it."
