Regenerate
Nicola Reed - United States

Regenerate is a mobile device that functions primarily for communication purposes. It uses 3rd generation technology, and has an easy to use interface that is displayed on a large touch screen. The main body of the device has the same dimensions of a credit card in length and width, and it's 'luggage tag' form allows it to be hung easily around the neck or to be attached to clothing. Regenerate can also be used for a variety of purposes, other than a being used as a phone. It can be used as a cash card, travel card, and most importantly to help you to reduce your impact on the environment. The device collects information about how efficiently you live your life. It does this by using GPS to measure how you travel, by measuring how much energy you are using in the home, and by assessing the products that you buy.

It displays this information in the form of a tree. If you are using a lot of energy your tree will be very small, but the more energy you save the more your tree will grow. To further encourage people to reduce their carbon emissions there are rewards for doing well. Each acorn that grows on your tree can be exchanged for a free text message, and if you collect two acorns you get a free minute of talk time.

Regenerate has a central core of biodegradable plastic made from wheat starch. This holds the electronic components in place and allows the device to be clipped to a lanyard or chain. The outer casing of the device and the charging unit are made out of wood harvested from sustainable forests. Two varying shades of wood have been used to create the decorative finish.
