According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 75 percent of the electricity that powers home electronics is consumed while these devices are turned off! Your cell phone charger, TV, computer and even your toaster are drawing energy right now unless they are unplugged.
The concept behind the "Youlet" Glowing Wall Outlet is that it makes you aware of the electricity you are consuming thus making it more likely that you will do something about it.
The outlet is equipped with low power LEDs on the reverse side. The outlet covers are 80% opaque under normal lighting conditions, but when the LEDs are lit up they make the entire outlet glow. When you have devices plugged in and drawing current, the light will be much brighter than when you have devices that are only drawing a small current. When there is nothing plugged in, the cover is not lit up. You can leave devices plugged in and not have the cover light up as well. This is done by "turning off" the outlet. There is a touch sensitive power button located in the top right corner that allows users to turn off the outlet when the connected devices are not in use. The glowing effect of the Youlet is intended to remind people to turn off the outlet when not in use.
These outlets can be used in all areas of the home where devices are plugged in. In the workplace, they can be used at an individual's desk allowing them to essentially turn off their workstation at the end of the day.
The aesthetic of the Youlet is similar to existing outlets but with a refined look. Rather than having a cover surround the outlet (as per usual) - the cover on the Youlet hides the outlet completely making the unit appear to be one piece, with no gaps for dirt or moisture to penetrate. The power switch is located as part of the cover and is easily connected into the circuit on the outlet, controlling the flow of electricity.
