Sometimes the simplest things can put the biggest smile on your face, and it's a sure bet that you'll be totally enchanted with Katherine Simpson's Simp L lamps. They have a charm and innocence lacking in much of today's overwrought lighting design, and their references to hand-sewn materials and processes provide a welcome reminder that "touch"--both literally and figuratively-- can play a well-considered role in the making of a mass-produced object. The "Li'l Cuties" pictured here feature shades that are made from coated tissue paper, then hand sewn into skirt shapes that appear to float freely above the base (made from sand-casted steel). Also available are the Every Homemakers lamps--one-of-a-kinds that use actual sewing patterns for the shades.

"It's not ice cream, but your dog will think it is!" is how the package copy begins on what is certain to become the cat's meow of the dog's dish. Frosty Paws Frozen Treat For Dogs looks and feels like ice cream, but is formulated to be healthful for dogs (dairy products in general can upset a dog's stomach). It's got protein, vitamins and minerals, and is free of added sugar and artificial flavors or colors. I have seen this stuff in action, and one dog I personally know (click here for photo & review) goes positively crazy with joy when she gets this delicious treat. They say that a dog's vocabulary of comprehension is as large as 60 words. Well, from here on in, make that 62. You pause, I pause... we all pause for Frosty Paws! Woof!

It's tough to dress up a business document without making it look as though you're trying too hard. And sometimes all those sophisticated binding systems are just total overkill for a few pages that simply need to be held together. Nifty Clips are a quiet and effective way of adding a speck of elegance when a paper clip is all you need. They do the job well, and might even save you a bit of room in the envelope or file, since they are "flattened to save card file space". Each time I've used one, people have commented, so whenever I see those advertisements on television about presentation software and copy-center services designed to help "get your documents noticed," I smile inside knowing that my couple-buck investment in a box of Nifty Clips made good business sense.
