PDT (Product Development Technologies), a product development firm located outside Chicago, recently worked with Paper Mate to help develop the Advancer -- the first self-advancing mechanical pencil from the brand. Advancer's "hidden magic" lies in its auto-advancing mechanism. As an individual writes, the mechanical pencil's mechanism automatically moves the lead forward, eliminating the need to stop, manually advance the lead, then begin writing again. Paper Mate worked with PDT to design Advancer toward its target market of ten to 18-year old students. The intention of Advancer is to provide consumers who dislike clicking mechanical pencils and are bothered by lead breakage with a revolutionary alternative. The design priority was to portray the functionality and the emotion of moving forward.
