The multi-disciplinary design super-firm, IDEO has joined forces with Organ Recovery Systems in a major advancement in donor organ preservation and transport. IDEO's mechanical and thermal engineering designs along with Organ Recovery Systems' organ preservation products and technology have made the new LifePort Kidney Transporter possible.

Organ perfusion technology, a process that aids in the preservation of kidneys, has been minimized from a stationary expert-operated machine to a small, fail-safe component device, making portability a reality for LifePort. This innovation alone could substantially increase the number of available donor kidneys. LifePort is small and light enough for one person to carry and has a clear display that allows the handler to monitor organ stability at a glance. The ice used to cool the kidneys is stored in a separate surrounding chamber, minimizing the risk of device disruption and organ contamination, two problems that tend to occur during traditional transportation methods.

The LifePort has recently begun to fly unattended in air cargo and is projected to offer lifesaving benefits to numerous patients in need of kidney transplants.
