This edition of hourglasses brings the artists' work into the realm of functional design. Originally conceived of on a whim, taking cafeteria salt shakers and transforming them into an ancient bit of timekeeping technology, the project has developed to include both iconic images from art history texts and whimsical drawings, encased in salt shakers as well as larger-scale sugar dispensers and other basic restaurant supplies. Used as egg timers, arbitrary timekeepers, or conversation and contemplation pieces, the works in this series are miniature musings on obsolescence, nostalgia, and the poetics of the everyday object.
