Awesome idea and very clean design... best there is.

2.Feb 2nd, 2009Alice Speri

this is brilliant!!

3.Feb 3rd, 2009Michael

The concept is basically sound, but the solar panel is impossibly small for the claimed wattage. It would make sense to have the panel lower and larger so that it can be used for shade, and it looks like a streetlight, so why not have a battery in t

4.Feb 3rd, 2009Alfonso Aguirre

Useful all over the world. Clearly, form follows function, and what our time requests from good and sound design. Congratulations!

5.Feb 3rd, 2009Julene Aguirre-Bielschowsky

Thank you very much for the comments and interest. Michael, the solar cells are mono-crystalline, they currently have the highest efficiency rate on the commercial market. The panel has a diameter of 95cm, fitting 21 solar cells of a 200mm diagonal (squarely cut in order to fit more, each is 156x156 mm). Each one of these cells provide 4 Watts at a high efficiency (achieved by the solar cells being high enough to avoid shading, by the sun station being round and therefore always possible to be i

...installed facing south -regardless of architectural direction-, and by the solar cells being in the appropriate angle according to latitude (30 degrees in Germany). There is a choice between a battery pack or a grid-tie inverter (placed in the base under the seat).

7.Feb 4th, 2009vanessa

I like the single seat (poetic) - though would be awesome if there were some versions which a few people could sit and use at once.

8.Feb 4th, 2009Maru Holtschmit

Congratulations! The design is very appropiate for outdoors, since it blends in with the environment. This is the future, instead of being indoors, you can be working in the fresh air, enjoying the son and be surrounded by nature. Can I order one for my backyard?

9.Feb 4th, 2009adagmu

Approaching the beauty and vital function of the plants. A good example of how the infraestructure for clean energy can blend nicely with the landscape. Congratulations!

10.Feb 4th, 2009mustafa

Great idea.... looks like your going to win ;) GOOD LUCK

11.Feb 4th, 2009Lucía Aguirre

I wish I could have one of those neerby!

12.Feb 4th, 2009Efraín Félix

pretty cool idea!....confort, environment friendly, smart. Efraín from México

13.Feb 4th, 2009cwh

Great concept...as to the criticism that the panel may not be big enough, you may want to look to a solution like Konarka's to add more solar reception without having to sacrifice form if there is need.

14.Feb 4th, 2009Carlos Vazquez

This is a great idea and could be helpful to provide energy in islated areas specially for developing countries. Great..keep on doing it!!!

15.Feb 4th, 2009Vikki Smithem

Wow what a great concpet. Very impressive design and environmentally friendly which will have a marketing edge in this era of green consumerism. Vikki

16.Feb 4th, 2009Victor SOSA

Looks good, sounds good, what about costs???

17.Feb 4th, 2009Ney Lagunes

This is a BIG IDEA, This is a real "Consumer Understanding"

18.Feb 5th, 2009Paul

19.Feb 5th, 2009daniel frieg

very nice julene..i like alot.. i vote for u. see u :)

20.Feb 5th, 2009Caue Bielschowsky

It should be an small investment with an easy return. I really like it. If there was one on the beach nearby my home it could be my office. I want one for me. Great work.

21.Feb 5th, 2009cg

I would suggest a receptacle cover that remains weatherproof when something is plugged in. This device would not be used much in bad weather, but such covers are required for exterior receptacles in some areas in new construction. It's quite possible that this would be installed near the beach, where you'd get mist or occasional water splashes. Over time the mist could bead and create an unsafe situation. Corrosion from the salt could also be an issue.

22.Feb 5th, 2009Juan Manuel de Anda

I like the project, good idea, nice shape, may be the reflection of the lap top's display could be a problem for the users.

23.Feb 5th, 2009Montserrat Pinto

Felicidades Julen !!! :D a votar !!!

24.Feb 5th, 2009Anthony Ceja

I love this clever idea! Wouldn't it be cool for us to be able to plug in to stations like this when needed? Great job!

25.Feb 5th, 2009Eduardo Arredondo

Great idea, environmentally friendly, I can see them in the near future in many of our parks and beaches in California, and YES, me too, I want one for my yard. Congratulations.

26.Feb 5th, 2009Rudy!!! Rudy!!! Rudy!!!

Q' Onda Julene!

28.Feb 5th, 2009Daniela Espinoza

Suuuuper mega nice Julene!!!! Muchas felicidades, como siempre super triunfadora!!!!!!

29.Feb 5th, 2009Eduardo Arredondo

Great idea, congratulations! I love the idea of having them in Parks and beaches here in California, it wouldn’t surprise me if we see them all over in the near future. And YES! I want one for my yard too.

30.Feb 5th, 2009AP

I Like it, this is just perfect for a place where thieves are extincted or maybe to use it in your backyard. :/ good idea though. Go green!

31.Feb 5th, 2009John Q.

Good idea, I just worry about the public fighting over the use of your product, especially in crowded areas.

32.Feb 5th, 2009Arturo Orozco

Excellent idea toward a greener world!!!

33.Feb 5th, 2009Leanne

Beautiful simple design. I'd love one my park, on the streets, in my backyard.

34.Feb 6th, 2009Procyon

I think that's a great idea. Clean energy, free, outdoor, useful in cities and country. Find a plug in many places you go. Congratulations.

35.Feb 6th, 2009Sahra

I love the concept, its seems like a logical next step following the internet stations in airports. I would love to have one here in dc next to the monuments, what great inspirations one would find working with such a great view.

36.Feb 6th, 2009Joerg

Its awesome! I will talk to my boss, he is in the sustainable business... Greetings from dresden!

37.Feb 6th, 2009Manuel

okay, nice idea. and of course we have to overthink our energypolitics. design is well too, but if you want to offer "greener" products, i would prefer something, wich is not made of "exotic rain forest wood" like teak . althoug teak has advantages ;) and of course for presentations teak shows "high quality", but surely there are already some (european) wood wich have the same high quality and pherhaps more advantages, at the same or lower price (i dont know exact

38.Feb 6th, 2009Mayra Frank

Wonderful, simple design and it looks really comfortable. Our parks will surely benefit from this environmentally friendly gadget. Great !!

39.Feb 7th, 2009PabloC

41.Feb 7th, 2009Lindsay Cope

AMAZING JULENE! I'd love to get some of these set up on my campus.

42.Feb 8th, 2009Thomas

This is a really nice work! But I´m afraid, if any community could afford more then a couple of them. But it could be interesting for private companies as well, if you could combine the station with further service. Maybe Access to the Internet, a soda machine or some tourist information. Maybe this could be a way to ge a lot of those beautiful station build all over the planet. Wish you all the Best! Thomas

43.Feb 8th, 2009sigmar willnauer

quite some products look weaker when you see them again after several months. this one went from 'fine' to 'excellent'. julene and her product should be in new york!

44.Feb 8th, 2009Bernd

The idea to provide public outlets for small quantities of solar electricity is quite fascinating, the styling is nice, and the use of materials looks just right, escept the teak wood! I would not want more trees in the Amazon rainforest cut for a product that is supposed to be eco-friendly.

45.Feb 8th, 2009Bernd

As for styling, the image you made of a person sitting on it shows that the pillar is too narrow to make a comfortable backrest, the flat seat is not very inviting either, and the tilt of the solar panel means that if the panel is supposed to face south, the seat will always face north. An ajustable joint might make sense there, so when setting the whole thing up in a public place it can face the most beautiful view, and then the PV panel can be pointed southward.

46.Feb 8th, 2009Bernd

This is, of course, one more demonstration fo the usability of solar energy to the public. With 84 Watts peak power (at noon, since the panel is not automatically moved to catch morning or afternoon sunlight), you can charge a battery that can supply about 100 W for several hours on a sunny day. Now imagine this system at a public beach and people coming along with their 1000-Watt hair driers, their baby-milk warmers, coffe cookers, portable refrigerators. Each of these people will find that the

47.Feb 8th, 2009Julene Aguirre-Bielschowsky

Thank you everyone so much for the comments and interest. About the teak wood comments: there is currently very big movement for sustainable teak wood (since it is the most resistant for all weather scenarios), and quite a variety of sustainable solutions are available…

48.Feb 8th, 2009Julene Aguirre-Bielschowsky

…About the shape: I meant the shape to stay abstract, I find the interaction with public furniture is made more personal when one can choose how to use an object, and is not demanded by the object to sit in a specific position. About the wattage, I limited the amount of energy because of two reasons: the first and obvious…

49.Feb 8th, 2009Julene Aguirre-Bielschowsky

…that is just how much energy you get with that amount of solar cells (I wanted to stay within the proportions of urban furniture), the second one is that I don’t think it is at all a problem to limit the energy at 100W, it emphasizes the didactic purposes of the product. I wanted people to relate the size of the solar cells with the type of gadgets they can use on it (hence getting a better idea between the difference between a 40 watt laptop and a 2,000 watt grill).

50.Feb 8th, 2009Nissa Guest

Super cool! Obviously, the public wants solar NOW...any way we can get it!!! The more solar the better...I want to be able to plug in my car at the Wal-Mart solar station

51.Feb 9th, 2009Dirk

You want use teak wood? You dont know whats happen with the jungles in the world?Solarzells also not the only way to use sun energy ... you need silizium!Look for other alternativs ... like thermic energy. I dont give you my sign for your idea ... with this materials. we need new ways!!!sorry

52.Feb 9th, 2009DB.K

Oh yeah! Definitely. We need this. ;) Love the idea. nice work.

53.Feb 9th, 2009Steffen

...Propably this would be a good opportunity for those people to become aware how much energy a 1000watt hairdryer needs, as they notice how the energy display goes to empty...

54.Feb 9th, 2009Isabel Guedes

Very important. The idea to provide public outlets for small quantities of solar electricity is quite fascinating.

55.Feb 9th, 2009Pedro B

Bravo !

56.Feb 9th, 2009Pedro Gallegos

Its a great idea, one of the best...i want this on my public parks, but...can you make like a roof for this, cuz the person sitten there will be toast in 20 minutes..maybe something like a wall.....great job ...congratulations

57.Feb 9th, 2009J.Organista

It's an excellent idea/design. It would also be useful at home and office. Congratulations!

59.Feb 9th, 2009Lewis McAnally

Great idea!! Where can I get one? :)

60.Feb 9th, 2009K. Nishikawa

Even when the proposal of your Sun Station it's been made on a developed country, and the image you show here seems to be in a place like Germany, I believe this design object can be very useful in developing countries, because it doesn't need conventional energy and it can be useful to shorten the digital gap in this kind of countries. I hope you can bring this design to real. Congratulations!

61.Feb 9th, 2009Ulises Serrano Chong

Hola Julenne. Excelente concepto y diseño. Suerte con la votación. Un saludo desde Ensenada.

62.Feb 9th, 2009Luis Ángel Contreras

Congratulations! Your idea is a high order synthesis of knowedge from different cientific and humanistic disciplines such as design, urbanism, electronics, ecology, economy and politics.

63.Feb 9th, 2009David Arredondo

Muchas Felicidades! Es una excelente idea Mucha suerte !!!!

64.Feb 9th, 2009Jamie Ronson

I like the use of public space in this design. Not only does it promote sustainability but it also uses public space in a really great way, ultimately with the potential to strengthen community. Congratulations on the excellent design. And I also like the comment that it could be a way of bridging the digital divide. Great idea.

65.Feb 10th, 2009Natalia Arroyo Rodriguez

Julene, muchas felicitaciones, me parece un gran gran proyecto. Natalia

66.Feb 10th, 2009Andolsa

67.Feb 10th, 2009Bivin

Hi Julene, I am Ikerne's old flatmate, just wanted to stop by and say "Well done!" and thank you for putting time and energy re the environment. Hope things work to plan and fruition. Cheers

68.Feb 10th, 2009Joana Gottlieb

Great idea. Beautiful, clean and functional design. Interesting social and ecological concept envolving the use of free and clean energy for outdoor spaces anywhere in the world, a perfect project for our times. Congratulations!

69.Feb 10th, 2009Nadia Suarez Bosche

Great idea Julene, very smart design just what our generation needs. I also work with projects related to climate change and believe me with needed to start using alternative ways to get energy a century ago. Congratulations!!! Best wishes from England.

70.Feb 11th, 2009Bart

When was the last time you saw someone using a laptop in direct sunlight? Its not easy to look at a screen in this environment - that's why people dont do it now. I question the true usability of the concept. Of course there are also all kinds of questions about sustainability in terms of full product lifecycle --- the amount of material/energy that goes into making these is going to destroy any eco-story you're telling.

71.Feb 11th, 2009mj

yes bart. because a laptop s the only electronic device a person would use outside.

72.Feb 12th, 2009Rosa Aurora Espinosa

Exciting project, combining both pasions use of new technologies and care of our planet.

73.Feb 12th, 2009Claudia Calderon

love the idea. Nice work . Felicidades

74.Feb 12th, 2009Abel Garcia

Great idea, I would love to see that in public places.

75.Feb 12th, 2009Isaura Torres

76.Feb 12th, 2009Claudia Vega

Me gusta mucho tu idea.

78.Feb 12th, 2009pedro guerrero

great project, good luck with the votes

Muchas gracias por tu aportación, y espero sea seleccionada tu propuesta.

99.Feb 16th, 2009Shio

Excente idea! bonito diseño, muy clínico.

100.Feb 16th, 2009Moisés Santos-Mena

Hola!!

Bravo!!

Great ideas ! Where can I buy them ?

108.Feb 17th, 2009Rafael Reyna

It's a great and useful design, especially for big cities. It would be great to have some of these Sun Stations in Mexico City where there is a real need for charging stations for the increasing number of laptops and mobile phones. I believe that this kind of innovations combining urbanism, gratuity, social service and ecology is the right path our societies should follow. Congratulations to the creator!

114.Feb 17th, 2009Ana Soto

115.Feb 17th, 2009Helgi Todtenhaupt

Congratulations for the really attractive design of the Sun Station. The idea to offer solar energy on a public level for the use of personal devices is convincing. But one question lingers in the background. How can such a device be protected against the ubiquitous desease of vandalism ? Is there any chance for “hardening” of the gadget in order to survive in a public environment ?

116.Feb 17th, 2009Malibé Rosas

Very useful and so green. I think is a great idea! Good luck with your project!

117.Feb 17th, 2009Maria Felix Lizarraga
