"BugPlug" is a simple energy saving gadget which prevents unnecessary (and often accidental) energy consumption. The device has a built-in motion sensor, turning off all connected devices (through powerstrips) when it detects no motion. (Time periods can be easily adjusted from 0 to 6 minutes.)

isnt setting a timer teh same concept as getting up after a show or movie and turning off the device yourself? i guess for your average uncaring person it could be good use but everyone i know turns off the the tv, lights, computer, and such when they are gone or done using the device....

I really like this idea. Two possible additions: Since powerstrips are often on the floor behind stuff and this wants to be in the open, connect them with a wire so this simply becomes a better on/off switch. Second, it could be good to have a button (or clever integrated action) to temporarily extend the timer. That way it can stay at 5min most of the time (and return to that automatically), but if I might be very still watching a movie I can extend it to 30min for that one session (it would g

@ Jeff Parsons - When you want to something by hand you need to think about it, remember it and in the end perform an action. The advantage of BugPlug is that it doesn't require almost any action nor changing your habits.

@ Jeff Parsons You missed the point, I'm afraid. You don't have to move all the time, because there is a timer. Obviously the functionality of the device depends on two main factors: the sensitivity of the motion detectors and the time at which the disconnection happens. But when these values are in right proportions everything should work just right.

How would this be useful when one is reading, listening to music, or watching TV? Is it sensitive enough to detect keyboard finger motion? My comment is the same as with Blink - stay involved with your home's energy consumption and do it by hand.

Great idea Guys!!!

The design is really nice so that children will accept it. It is a good way to teach them that saving energy is important.

It's so good. Think about effect that emission of CO2 does to the ozone layer. Losing energy is the main problem. Wish luck to AH i OH and Kamil Jerzykowski :)

I really like the idea of a motion detector for the home. I can really see it really being helpful with power strips because your not going to remember to turn all of them off. Though I can see a problem if your using one that is attached to a powerstrip for your tv

Cute and cool.. except for the name.. I cannot stop thinking of butt plugs

Wicked cool... and useful. All of the previous comments sum up anything I would have said, but I'd love to see this existing for purchase.

Its a thoughtful concept that has been enhanced by a super interesting presentation. Good work and best of luck !!

Thank you very much for interest Przemke. I was thinking about these sound or light indicators by making something similar to selftimer in cameras. But on the other hand I wanted to keep it simple, even in description. Manual switch is not so necessary beceause you can use some piece of cloth to cover the detectors and make BugPlug fall asleep (it would work just like covers for bird cages) and the interaction would more personal.

Kamil great idea and fantastic design! It would definitely need to make some sound before cutting the power off - just to remind about what might happen. Also a manual switch would be useful. For example, many people may prefer to switch everything on/off when entering/leaving the room. Or perhaps an option: off on request and on when motion detected? so this bugplug must be a powerstrip down on the floor as well ? I'm interested in getting/discussing some more details - you can e-mail me at p

Good remark, but the device has built-in timer so device doesn't cut off power suddenly and unexpectedly, but after a while. And this "while" can be adjusted. I have to admit that maximum time of 6 min. could be to short for many people and extending it to about 30 min. would be a good move.

its very very nice... :) i want it!

What happens if you are sitting very still watching tv or a movie or reading? does it turn off? Is it only for fidgety people?

25.Feb 3rd, 2009Darshan

Good concept. TV and TiVo and Cable boxes are the devices that come to my mind very first. Would be nice if the concept was further developed to provide power at intervals and at certain times.

Nice, I like it. I would need one for a UK plug tho!
