Stem - Compostable Toothbrush

Andres Roppa - Uruguay

Stem is a compostable toothbrush that adds to the growing list of consumer items that are switching to compostable, biodegradable bioplastics. The product has a closed lifecycle, from material processing (corn or potato starch) to compost generation, for more plants.

The key lightness attributes of the Stem system are:

MINIMUM AND MONO-MATERIAL USE
This includes the packing, that serves as a protective cap when taking your toothbrush to work, and a hollow lightweight body. All graphics and instructions are embossed on the components.

BACK TO EARTH
The natural degradation of the body due to contact with water and moisture works as a reminder for changing your brush in time. This also simplifies the process of disposal, cracking the body using it's own end as a screwdriver. Waste is minimal, including the bar code sticker and the security seal that breaks on pulling open the first time.

INFORMATION
The Stem lifecycle concerns concepts regarding personal care, as well as environmental care. Re-considering the action of throwing away, and generating the opportunity to create a greener home environment, without any participation of the garbage can.

LOOKING FORWARD
Nylon is used for the bristles as in a normal toothbrush, though switching to biodegradable nylon would be the next step. Alternate product colours according to different plants would include corresponding seeds.
