Eco-Scoop
Arran Smith - United KingdomThe Eco-scoop project is motivated by a shocking statistic that 70% of inner-city waste in Great Britain is takeaway related. A large volume of this material is material used to make food containers and eating utensils. With further research into this material I found that Styrene is the most widely used, in the absence of UV light (similar to a land fill site) styrene has a half-life of approximately 650 years.
The Eco-scoop provides an alternative to the white styrene utensils, and is made from waxed card so is renewable and biodegradable. As well as its environmental benefits the lightweight material and flat pack design makes it logistically superior to the styrene alternative. Making it ideal for camping, military or airline use, and its resistance to impact makes it suitable for air drops for emergency aid.
The Eco scoop offers a sustainable low technology alternative that is economically as viable as the widely used styrene utensils, which is reliant on dwindling oil supplies. This every day utensil won't save the world but plays its part in not contributing to the environmental concerns of a throwaway culture. The Eco-scoop points to a better way of doing things and provoking us to evaluate the impact of the smallest of things in life.
