Shade
Joshua Guerra - United StatesSHADE is a sustainable shading system that operates in the context of parking lots for retail/business centers and works to collect energy from the sun via emerging photovoltaic technology. The goal of this design is to reduce the “heat island effect” of urban and suburban hardscapes, and to absorb solar radiation and convert the energy into electricity using photovoltaic fabrics. The design is made possible through the use of readily available materials for the frame-work of the structure. The design seeks to emulate the biological processes of vegetation in photosynthesis and more specifically the physical benefits of trees in their ability to provide shade to users.
The system can be set up in small numbers or large groups and the energy harvested from the devices is stored in battery stations on-site for the use of the retail center or businesses. In addition to providing electricity and shade during the day, the devices can be fitted with LED lighting on the “branches” to illuminate the parking areas for safety.
SHADE’s features seek to work with and improve upon existing infrastructure with benefits that impact the environment, the comfort of users, and the profitability of real estate.
