Paper Bag into Envelopes

Xanthe Matychak - United States

I started this project with the assumption that a paper bag is used for, and thus symbolizes, a solitary act of consumption and possession: I buy stuff, I put it away in my bag, and I take it home for my own use/pleasure. Therefore, I wanted the bag to somehow encourage the individual to engage with his or her community. This bag is designed to be transformed into three standard mailing envelopes. The envelopes serve as vehicles for communication.

I employed the (original) graphic of the flying Canada Geese to illustrate the user’s transcendence of consumption of material goods (represented by the bag) to an engagement in conversation with community (afforded by the envelopes). The Canada Geese is native to my location in New York State, but other birds might be used in other locations to align the power of communication with the power of flight.

Materials: small diameter kraft paper, soy based inks, water-soluble pressure sensitive adhesives.
