Black Cameo Project

Marybeth Mooney - United States

In 1997, the Kyoto Protocol was introduced, with mandatory targets for reducing greenhouse emissions in industrialized nations. The world automotive industry has hardly taken heed of this development, and the United States alone has seen a spike in heavy marketing of SUVs and Trucks to consumers.

To create public debate about this situation, and to encourage a change in thinking and buying patterns, a series of cameo brooches will be created, one for every make and model of SUV and Truck since 1997. These pins will foster public debate when they are auctioned off to a roster of celebrities at a major charity event.

Pins will be worn outside on the red carpet after the event, creating impromptu celebrity endorsement. The event will be photographed heavily by the paparazzi, major tabloid headlines are created, and a dynamic public debate over the "Light Truck" loophole, Mileage Standards and Climate Change will ensue in the United States. (Funds from the auction go towards lobbying, public relations campaigns and youth education programs.)

Brooches will be constructed from two components: Reclaimed Steel and Crude Oil suspended in Resin. Trucks or SUVs that have been sent to the scrap yard will be reclaimed and melted down to form a polished steel frame for the brooch. Crude Oil will be mixed with a resin and poured into molds depicting each vehicle. Artisans will be commissioned for this project to create a strong, modern, intoxicating object worthy of public scrutiny.
