Kick Your LED Up a Notch
Professor Fred Schubert has developed a new coating technology to enhance the light output of white light LEDs. He is hopeful that this new technology, called the Omni Directional Reflector Coating will raise the efficiency of LEDs to above that of fluorescents. At 17% current fluorescent lamps are more efficient than incandescents, but not good enough; Schubert hopes the new technology will allow LEDs to achieve efficiencies around 50%. This would drastically cut both lighting energy needs, and air conditioning costs in the united states and the developed world, while opening up opportunities for Novel computer controlled lighting solutions in homes.
