Germs Make You... Plastic?

A team of researchers at University College Dublin have isolated a strain of common soil bacteria which are capable not only of breaking down toxins, but turning them into viable industrial plastics. The germs convert styrene (the monomer component of the common plastic polystyrene that most people call styrene) into PHA, a biodegradable plastic which is useful in everything from plastic paper coatings to medical implants.
