Tastes like baker's chocolate to me
This has been eating me for months. (you like that pun don't you). So much so, that I've decided to end my blogging hiatus, so I can talk about this topic.First:
Who designs a phone, makes it black and then thinks let's call it "CHOCOLATE"? No way that happened! The original design had to have been brown. And then some tuck-in came along and did some market testing and decided no one would buy a brown phone. Voila! black chocolate was born. And to top it off:
There are now a few new phone "flavors" on the market: cherry, mint, and get this "white"! I've sat through many a naming consistency meetings, and certainly cherry, mint, and white are not all in the same category! "White" is certainly not a flavor. Of course I get that it's supposed to be white chocolate. And we all know that white chocolate isn't really pure white.
Alright, I think I've let it all out. See for yourself: CHOCOLATE by LG

Why your choice of materials is so important
If you ever wanted proof of how important the right choice of materials and processes are in the design and development of consumer products (not that they aren't in industrial machinery) today's story in the BBC
underscores it. Here's a snippet,Both lawsuits argue that the problems with the screen on the Nano are due to a design flaw. They alleged that Apple was aware of the issue, but chose to ignore it in the rush to get the players into the shops.
"The far-reaching response also reveals that this is not just a small problem or a bad batch of Nanos, but a defect in the overall design that should have been rectified prior to the release," he said.
design your life
from Ellen and Julia Lupton
is not about shopping or decorating. Nor is it about a caste of specialists endowed with mysterious talents and impenetrable secrets.
DESIGN YOUR LIFE is about thinking.
DESIGN YOUR LIFE applies ideas from design theory and practice to some of the basic problems of daily living, from organizing a household and thinking creatively in the workplace to achieving a relaxed and satisfying erotic life. Yes, design can be brought to bear on all of these things, from good housekeeping to hard work to great sex.

Douglas Rushkoff gives it away
Rushkoff will be posting 10 tidbits from his upcoming book, "Get Back In The Box: Innovation from the Inside Out" on his blog
. Here's a taste from the first one:The longevity and prosperity of any enterprise depends most on its participants' ability to maintain the wellspring of innovation. And the way to do this is to remember that you are always the source of your own best ideas. The most successful businesses for the next century will turn out to have been based not on infinitely repeatable Harvard Business School lesson plans, but on a combination of competence and passion. Dissecting an enterprise after the fact to see what made it work is akin to conducting on autopsy on a person to see what made him live. The very pursuit is symptomatic of the highly fragmented approach to business we're leaving behind.

SF and LA: Not cool anymore
"The idea of living in the middle of the desert in a prefab 1,200-square-foot home, stretching ourselves financially and driving three hours a day, wasn't appealing anymore," Mr. Cannon, 34, said.Interesting article in the NYT
about a social trend of moving away from California, specifically San Francisco and LA. Apparently, the high cost of living eventually outweighs culture, good food, and sunshine. I'm doubtful of this effect on designers as we would probably be one of the last demographics to leave a major metropolitan center, unless of course it was to go another major metropolitan center.
sidenote: The Times infographics for this article are as gorgeous as always.
