Greetings July Design Fans, This month we unveil (unleash?) a new summer look to Core77.com, a redesign aimed at improved readability and access to your favorite design news, interviews, photo galleries, discussions and more. We'll be adding more functionality over the next months, and tweaking the new interface as we move forward. We'd love to read your comments--there's a site feedback thread in the forum--but give us a couple of weeks to polish things up before you pile on too hard. Features-wise, we've got the stellar Phil Patton reviewing the equally-stellar Buckminster Fuller show at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and Aart van Bezooyen covering the, get ready, Hamburg Harley Days extravaganza--a show that culminates in over 75,000 bikers in one parade. On the flip side, Robert Blinn writes a macro-economic primer for design(ers) and sustainability, and to top the month off, we've got a great gallery of projects from the inaugural 100% Design Shanghai, shot by Simon Husslein. Also check out the winner of the latest One Hour Design Challenge: Powertools, and spend a few minutes with a new feature we have at the site: Core77 Show+Tell Videos. This month we're featuring short videos from Marco Perry, Steve Portigal, and Mike DiTullo, showing off projects, skills, and insights for your designerly pleasure. Think of them as cool drinks for the hot summer days ahead. Start with the macro-economic primer (seriously), |

It's the Economy, Stupid: A macroeconomic primer for design(ers) and sustainability, by Robert Blinn "Looking at the world through such a lens makes one thing clear: Despite our mansions and our roadways, our designer jeans and our iPhones, human beings have made very little. Instead we've transmuted stored energy into temporary value in exchange for long-term waste. All of the growth that our politicians seek to perpetuate is not growth at all."
A Pair of Flying Slippers: Phil Patton reviews the Buckminster Fuller exhibition at the Whitney "If Fuller saw himself as a verb it may be because his life was dominated more by activity than artifact. He truly found himself in his presentations and lectures, from his first talks to a handful of people in Greenwich Village salons to the vast college audiences he drew in his old age. His real skills were "synergistic," all right, but it was the synergy of networking, propaganda and performance."
HAMBURG HARLEY DAYS 2008, gallery by Aart Van Bezooyen Custom details, tailpipes and tattoos! More than 75,000 bikers attended one of the biggest Harley Davidson events in Hamburg from June 20-22. Be sure to check out this gallery of rock n' roll of design.
100% DESIGN SHANGHAI, gallery by Simon Husslein From June 26-28, the likes of Richard Hutten, Michael Young and Patrick Jouin joined creative directors Tobias Wong and Aric Chen in the Shanghai Exhibition Center to showcase design in one of the fastest developing parts of the world.
1 Hour Design Challenge : Power Tools It's big, it's brawny, it's dude heaven! (No - not mud wrestling!) Power Tools! This month we challenged Core readers to flex their skills and design the next greatest piece of mechanical muscle in one hour or less. Together with guest judge Brian Matt of Altitude we've narrowed it down to a selection that would make Tim Allen proud. Check 'em out here. 1. Air Force
