Core77 Designer Shopping Guide Core77 Designer Shopping Guide

Interior architects B3 Designers have turned their east end studio into an intriguing Cardboard Cafe, made from 8.000 (!) cardboard boxes! It was certainly one of the more inspired projects to be spotted at the London Design Festival, although the hired (!) staff representing the young studio didn't quite do justice to neither the great project nor the admirable value system of its creators. So we were misinformed regarding the disposal of the structure, however the studio have been in touch and we were informed that the boxes will in fact be used again to show the project at other exhibitions in the future - so it's a cheer for the good guys! Vive la cardboard revolution!

Brit Leissler

  • x

Brit Leissler lives and acts between London and Berlin. After receiving a Master degree in product design from the Royal College of Art in London she started her own Shoot the Stylist! design studio. She also works as a design educator for various institutions and founded Punch'n'Cuddle Ltd., producing and distributing her own products.

When taking a break from the design world she writes, sings and composes quirky electronic pop or travels the planet. Brit loves all forms of eccentricity, joins up the dots and aims to get into interesting conversations with all kinds of weird and wonderful people. As a hardcore digital camera gunslinger she shoots everything that moves and grooves. She doesn't eat animals, is hot for cheese, loves the Kensington Squirrels, robotic dance moves and life enhancing ideas.

How were the boxes connected? was it bolts or cable ties or glue? were you able to disassemble them with out damaging the boxes?

The kind folks at B3 replied to my concerns and explained how their setup was not going to waste. Here is a copy of what Emma at B3 wrote: I am glad to inform you that it is only a rumor we are of course not going to throw away any of the boxes. The left over boxes we donated to Goldsmiths students who were building an installation in a 24 hour Design and Make in Deptford. Someone unfortunately drove through our arches, destroying them, and these boxes we have recycled. We have had some people interested in exhibiting the installation at other venues, but if this does not work out then the rest will all also be recycled. When thinking about the materials we could use for our cafe, recyclability was one of the major factors in the deciding process, as we are all too aware of the current environmental concerns. U
