Upon hearing of this project my first thought was "You've gotta be ballsy to tackle a re-design of something as established as a Persian rug," but then I thought, "When was the last time I or anyone I know actually purchased a Persian rug?"

Writes ID'er Paul Hendrikx, co-founder of the Netherlands' Studio Mango,

The Persian carpet is a product which has been around for centuries if not a millennium, a product with great tradition and heritage. Nevertheless its appeal has been decreasing, many young people consider it to be an object for granny's house. So Studio Mango decided to grab the rug and update it to be ready for the year 2010 without losing touch of its original origin and heritage. A collection of 6 different models and sizes has been taken into production by Umbra.

Theoretical list of smartbook "essentials" is missing one crucial thing. Oh, what could it be?

It needs a microphone, a camera, "ubiquitous networking," it's gotta be thin, et cetera, et cetera: In "Building the Google smartbook dream machine," InfoWorld runs down their idea of the ten essential components needed by the perfect smartbook (and accompanies it with a slideshow that reeks of "Oh crap--this is...

Peter DeMaria's shipping container church wins AIA award

After their heyday as storage facilities had passed, the warehouse lofts of SoHo sat largely unused in the 1970s, until groups of artists and creatives realized their potential. Here was all this huge, empty space sitting in the middle of downtown Manhattan, and all you needed was a crowbar to...

Masters Program in Sustainable Product-Service System Innovation

The Biekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) in Karlskrona, Sweden is offering a new (and what looks to be dynamite) 2-year Master's Program in Sustainable Product-Service System Innovation (MSPI). This program combines business, engineering, design to prepare students to "support the sustainable development of global economy and society". Applications for...
