French designers Amaury Poudray and Rémi Bouhaniche of USIN-e have created a set of rattan furniture that uses tension to hold large swaths of basketry in place. The woven pieces are tucked into a stiff frame instead of being woven around it, creating rigid, but ambiguous, surfaces and volumes.
The weaving was done by the E.S.A.T. Gallieni in Villeurbanne, France, which offers visually-impaired workers a profession in support of their autonomy.
For the designers, this project is an exploration of contrasts: "What we aim at is creating a link between things apparently in contrast: persons, techniques, materials. Creating paradoxes, tension and lightness, emptiness and fragility, like the world around us."
Only two of the 7 pieces are pictured here. See the rest of the furniture and baskets at The Gallery in Brussels through June 12th.
More after the jump.
