Designed by French designers Kkristen and Vincent Moreau, Firefly is an interactive installation on view at the Shanghai World Expo. A multi-colored projection on the ground reacts to human behavior like a swarm of glowing insects:
These ones change their appearance in human presence : they wriggle, light up and scatter in response to the motion of visitors around. The cloud alternately disperses and merges... and its shape evolves to take a different appearance, again and again. Firefly is an invitation to play, in search of a sensitive interaction between man and his environment.
Though interactive light installations can often be pretty lackluster despite the technology behind them, we appreciate the directness and appeal of this one. It's beautiful, easy to understand and react to, and does what it set out to do: encourage play. It's evident that the two kids in the video above are completely captivated (like cats and a laser pointer).
A few more shots after the jump. If you're lucky enough to be in Shanghai, look for Firefly in the lighting design section of the Urban Best Practices Area.Create a Core77 Account
