Here's video of the Glasgow School of Art's annual Product Design Engineering student exhibition, kicked off by department head Craig Whittet explaining what, educationally speaking, gives GSA PDE students their two-for-one skill set.
We also get a brief video explanation of GSA prize-winning student Nils Aksnes' Recoil Oil Spill Recovery System at 1:01:
PD Engineering always do a great job and generate a lot of interest from businesses from around the world, but I think the fact that their degree show is so geared up for investment and profit takes a lot of attention away from the Product Design department's degree show, just across in the next studio!
The guys in Product Design have done a fantastic job this year, showing off their talent in Service, Interaction, Experience and Industrial Design. Such a diverse range of capabilities! The PD engineers showcase their work really well, but lack the graphic understanding of Product Design, who are taught to communicate and present to a much higher standard. Don't get me wrong, the presentation is backed up by rigorous design work, done to the same standard as any modern design consultancy. I find it really hard to believe that they get so little press, their work is great! Unfortunately, it is less geared up for profit and investment from Businesses, and so the attention is biased towards the PD Engineers.
Someone from Core77 needs to go take a look, it was only across a bridge!
I'm in PD at the GSA in second year, my friends degree shows are next year, and the year after. Mines is the year after that.
Be there!
(This is classic PD vs. PDE rivalry, the PD Engineers deserved the video, their stuff was really good as always!)
