"Easier, faster, better, high performance—it's the effect, not the thing." CBS Sunday Morning did a great profile on New York City-based Smart Design and their design philosophy in remaking tools for everyday. Founder and CEO Davin Stowell touches on his early work for Corningware and designing the now-iconic French White collection in order to avoid the floral blue Corningware pattern and takes us through a quick glimpse at the design process for everything from the OXO potato peeler to the OXO sink strainer.
If choosing a kitchen product is anything like dating, designer Davin Stowell has some advice:
"We can't really rely on love at first sight. You know, relationships develop over time. You're not going to know at first glance whether it's gonna do what you expect it to do."
He should know! For more than 30 years, as head of his firm Smart Design, Stowell and his team have created some keepers...the kind of products you settle down with.
