Near Core77's NYC offices you'll frequently spot film crews shooting movies or commercials, with Crosby Street being a favorite location. Amidst the setting up of the lights and the shooting tents, the thing that looks like the biggest pain in the neck to set up is the dolly track, and you'll see the P.A.'s down on their hands and knees shimming and leveling the thing. If the director decides he needs that smooth rolling shot, that's all you can do.
Is there a better way to get a dolly shot? At press time, 1,039 Kickstarter backers thought so, pledging some $240,952 towards CineSkates.
CineSkates are a set of three wheels that quickly attach to a tripod and enable fluid, rolling video in an ultra-portable package. [They] work specifically with the GorillaPod Focus tripod [and a Ballhead X, both included.]
Given that more and more people are shooting projects with Canon 5Ds rather than bulky dolly-requiring Panaflexes, these ought to have a strong appeal for the indy shooter. It's true that these don't lend themselves to traversing, say, a cobblestone street the way you could with a dolly set-up, but all you'd have to do is lay a sheet of plywood down. It's gotta be easier than having to construct a track.
There's 32 days left in the pledging period, but CineSkates has long since blown past their measly $20,000 target.
