As someone sorely lacking in kitchen space, I'm intensely covetous of the Galley Sink, a cleverly-designed system that greatly maximizes the functionality of a limited footprint.

The idea is simple: Two steps along each lengthwise edge allow you to slide a variety of accessories back and forth as needed, ranging from cutting boards to container-holding cutouts to racks and even a portable induction-style burner. Check it out:

I love how the narrator carefully enunciates "H-D-P-E" like it's some alien material.

Dave: Thank you! Hand washing dishes at the Galley is easy with the round sink accessory! Check out this video of hand-washing dishes at the Galley here: http://youtu.be/IyIRttLVIIw Jomy: The Kohler Stages Sink size is 45" wide and 12-3/4" of that is a slanted platform area, leaving roughly 32" to use as the actual sink. The Galley has three sizes to choose from (4', 5 1/2' and 7'), and every inch of the sink is usable. The Galley, when paired with the Signature Accessories, is the ULTIMATE work station! The Kohler Stages sink is a similar concept. The Stages sink does not have as many accessories available however it is a tiny fraction of the price of the Galley Sink.

love it! reminds me of voctor papanek's coffee table design from 'nomadic furniture' where the table essentially is just legs and 2 rails into which plant pots, a record player and a magazine rack can all sit flush alongside tabletop panels. I am not sure about making the whole thing one enormous basin- that would be a lot of water to soak the dishes in, I suppose you are just meant to have a dishwasher?

    Car Sharpie

My freshman year, there was a kid we used to call "Subway" because he was always the first to pass out at a party, and then everyone would start drawing on him with Sharpies. Despite his hard partying he was a good student, and one thing I know he learned...

German-Designed Bottle Opener That Doubles as a Bottle Closer

My beer-drinking friends will undoubtedly call me a sissy for this, but here goes: On a sunny Scottish afternoon, at a pub in Edinburgh I discovered the best beer I'd ever tasted: a local brew called Innis & Gunn that's matured in whisky barrels. Their Highland Cask 18 is beer...

    A Lock That Learns

Although it's several years old, currently making the blog rounds is the BOLT line of locks. BOLT is an acroynm for Breakthrough One-key Lock Technology, and their line-up's key (ha) feature is that rather than coming with a set of keys, the locks "learn" your key, meaning that's one less...

Idealistic Urban Design: Streetside Charging Points and a City in the Sky

Two ideas for things we'll probably never see, but which would be nice if they could actually be realized. The first is Brooklyn-based Pensa Design's Street Charge, which would be so useful that I can't ever see the City of New York agreeing to install them. The concept is to...
