As motion-control rigs proliferate, we're seeing a lot of beautiful time-lapse video that allows us to perceive our environments in new ways. Two videos that are currently making the blog rounds are below, and what we found striking was how paradoxically similar and totally different they are.
The first, "Nightfall," was done by filmmaker Colin Rich and is an exploration of Los Angeles. Be sure to maximize it:The second, "Night Skies," captures unbelievably brilliant stars cutting through the darkest, most light-pollution-free skies in the continental U.S., and lightly touches on the subculture surrounding that capturing. Again, must be seen full-screened:
Both videos are gorgeous though man-made, concrete-scarred Los Angeles couldn't be any more different from Mother Nature's gift of Yosemite. In the hands of talented shooters, time-lapse high-def videos are the great equalizer.
