Over the next few weeks we will be highlighting award-winning projects and ideas from this year's Core77 Design Awards 2013. We will be featuring these projects by category, so stay tuned for your favorite categories of design! For full details on the project, jury commenting and more information about the awards program, go to Core77DesignAwards.com.
The project was a promotional campaign for YBCA and its new "YBCA:You" initiative.
- How did you learn that you had been recognized by the jury?
Via an email from Core77. We had a reminder on the calendar to watch the live announcement, but (as is often the case) got distracted by all the work that happens here on a daily basis.
- What's the latest news or development with your project?
The SFMOMA is closing for three years due to the wall of heads' constant taunting from across the street. (Actually they're closing for renovations, but what a great story!) The YBCA + You program is slowing adding more and more members. We continue to hear praise from people of all backgrounds of how much they like the campaign.
- What is one quick anecdote about your project?
After Adam and I finished the initial presentation of this idea to the client, YBCA's executive director (who, sadly, has moved on to a new gig) exclaimed "I've been waiting 20 years for a campaign like this! It's f--king brilliant." Then he gave us both a hug. By far the best client meeting we've ever had.
- What was an "a-ha" moment from this project?
Because YBCA is a cutting-edge arts organization, the initial tendency is to create really "design-y", formally-driven solutions. This idea really popped off the critique wall when we put all of the initial explorations up for review, and that was it, really. Done deal.
The other a-ha moment was realizing how many low-priced, quick turnaround clipping path services there are. These guys saved our asses when it came time to execute all the deliverables.
Project Name: Experiments in Motion, identity and website. Designers: Project Projects
Experiments in Motion is a research initiative conducted by the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation in partnership with Audi of America to develop and test new paradigms in the relationship between motion, mobility and design.
Project Projects collaborated with Columbia GSAPP and Audi of America to develop a graphic identity and website for the overall project.
- How did you learn that you had been recognized by the jury?
We were informed via email, and were excited to hear of continued recognition of the Experiments in Motion project, which was a really dynamic collaboration between Audi of America, Columbia GSAPP, and Tumblr, exploring the expansive possibilities of motion, mobility, and design.
- What's the latest news or development with your project?
The EIM site continues to act as an archive for project, as well as of the students' research. We hope that the project will live on in new iterations in the future.
- What is one quick anecdote about your project?
One of the most memorable moments for us was our participation in a roundtable discussion on motion. Rob joined fellow panelists Michael Rock, Glen Cummings, Mark Wigley, Peter Vidani, Abe Burmeister, and Chris Woebken for a talk on interactivity, which literally took place at a round table, in motion, atop a rotating platform in Audi's showroom.
- What was an "a-ha" moment from this project?
For us, it was realizing that we could use Tumblr as an educational platform, and track how ideas move and evolve through networks: the movement of information itself became a fitting exploration in line with the project. We are grateful for Tumblr's collaboration throughout—it was great to work with them, this project would not have been possible without their partnership.
Project Name: Code & Type Designer: Kyuha Shim
This project invites designers who want to combine computational processes and typography. My book and website (Code & Type) expose users to autonomous visual representation methods as well as rational perspectives that bring a new paradigm in graphic design. I developed these tutorial materials when I was teaching a course: Data Multi-sensory Representation at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
- How did you learn that you had been recognized by the jury?
Few minutes before receiving the email, I saw my name listed on the the Core77 Design Awards website.
- What's the latest news or development with your project?
I paused updating a new code on the website. However, there will be a new project coming this fall named 'Creative Code.'
- What is one quick anecdote about your project?
Code & Type is an open-source website inviting designers who want to integrate computational processes and typography.
- What was an "a-ha" moment from this project?
I guess users feel it, when they download the source code and recreate their own by chaining parameters.
