Creating a video can be daunting enough as it is—sure, the tools are more available than ever, but you still need to figure out lighting, sound and editing, to say nothing of composition and the story itself. A video that illustrates how awesome your project is? Even harder... which is why we want to help you get the wheels turning when it comes to making a submission video that will make your project stand out. (Note: Videos are not a requirement for submitting an entry to the Core77 Design Awards, but they are recommended.)
We've pulled together some of 2013's best submission videos. You don't have to be a professional videographer to impress us—some of the best videos we've seen are straightforward, simple and shot with a handheld camera. From our DIY category to Educational Initiatives, there's always a way to bring your project to life in front of the camera. Check out some of our favorites (and find out why we thought they were so neat):
Beet Box With all of the bells and whistles video editing has to offer, it's easy to forget about your video's star: your project. That's why we love this video—the Beet Box steals the show, and the team has done a good job showing just how easy it is to interact with. You don't need any extensive videography knowledge to create a video like this either—set up your camera on a tripod, turn it on, make sure you've taken off the lens cap, and hit record. That's it.
Dr. Wagon This team played off of their design's cutesy look to nice effect—don't be afraid to give your video some personality. And you don't have to prepare an entire speech explaining your design's function—let your work speak for itself. It's much more interesting to see something inanimate come to life than to hear you talk about it. As long as you remember that sometimes you need to show, sometimes you need to tell.
LungA School An educational initiative can be hard to visualize, let alone represent, in a short video. This submission from the LungA School does a good job of showing the reaction people had to their work. Don't feel like you can't submit a video because you don't have a specific product to show for all of your work—sometimes, peoples' responses are all you need.
312 Park This video does a great job of walking us through every single aspect of the app to who the full extent of the service. Instead of talking it out, have someone using the app in a real-life situation. Don't be afraid to get into the details when it comes to apps and other technologies. We can all assume how an app basically works—show us how yours is different.
Culi-Kids Cookery Kit Timing is important when it comes to making a video—if it's too long you'll lose interest and if it's too short you'll leave the viewer with unanswered questions. This video is short and sweet—just long enough to get the point across.
