As the first deadline for this year's program creeps up on us, we've been catching up with some 2013 honorees who took advantage of the Earlybird entry period about their award-winning projects. Yesterday, we spoke to one of the designers behind the Plinko Poetry Machine. This time, we touched base with ROLF Spectacles—a small, family-run business situated in the heart of the Tyrolean Alps in Austria—who submitted a series of glasses handmade from natural materials. Their project was named a Professional Runner Up in the Consumer Products category.
Read on to see how the team has grown professionally since last year's Design Awards:Core77: How has ROLF grown since you entered it in the Core77 Design Awards? Did it win additional awards or have you worked on developing it more?
ROLF Team: ROLF entered the Core77 Design Awards 2013 with the "advanced collection–Hornet 51 Sun" winning a Professional Runner Up in the Consumer Products category. One of the company's goals is to set new trends in design and to implement new ideas. Since entering the Core77 Design Awards, ROLF's research and development team has further developed new designs and materials. The new horn collection being presented at the Silmo trade show in Paris last year was just one of many highlights. ROLF also received the German Materialica Award for its stone eyewear, which honors the big investments in research and development.
How has your Professional life advanced in the past year? Any notable new projects?
ROLF has further developed its collection with new designs and materials and has also grown in size, with many new projects in the pipeline waiting to be put to action. Our professional lives never stop or get dull and boring, which ensures the constant improvement and growth in both quantity and quality. One of the bigger projects this year is the restoration of an old truck which was built completely in Austria—a lot of work but great fun.
Do you have any words of advice for current entrants? Or for young designers in general?
ROLF combines a love of design, fascination for wood and natural materials and the enthusiasm to create new things which have never existed before. These are the most important components for a successful, forward-thinking, fast-moving company who is always one step ahead. A word of advice would be to constantly follow your dreams and make the impossible possible and to go that step further with a passion for what you are doing. Further it is important to focus on your on own ideas, keep things simple and try to be yourself. With those words of advice just enjoy every step of the journey.
