One of the more beautifully displayed lines in the Discover Design section of the IH+HS, Finell is the most recent endeavor by Rebecca Finell, who'd previously founded the Boon Inc. I was immediately drawn to the sleek and minimal booth, where I discovered an array of what Finell calls "neo luxe housewares and accessories."
JOIN, in Bubble and Facet, is a a series of triple-threat textured pieces. Singularly used as a placemat or a trivet, they can also be placed side by side, giving the illusion of a continuous table runner or matted surface. The silicone material was incredibly smooth to the touch and for those who geek out on packaging the magnetically closing box, spray-coated to mimic the silicone product inside, is almost as desirable as the piece.
HEX, a three-part stackable baking dish named for its shape, is meant to create geometrically shaped cakes and quiches. And though it is easy to see HEX work just as well in an organizational capacity—perhaps the bottom tray for mail, the middle for pens, and the top for keys and coins—such daily clutter would most definitely undercut it's sharp and minimal look.
GRIP, in Parallel and Round, combines the silicone and coated-aluminum materials of JOIN and HEX in a serving tray for klutziest of hosts. Stretchy bands span the width of the rectangular or circular trays, creating tension for cups or bowls placed inside. Even when held at an angle, the vessels stay put and depending on level of fill inside, remain nearly spill-proof. The bands also stretch across the bottom of each tray for traction, to keep it from sliding. Useful indoors, but more so while traveling across an uneven grassy surface or the boat of a deck to serve guests, one wonders if Finell herself was thinking about the upcoming spring season when creating this piece.
During our conversation it came as no surprise when Amber Kern, the Marketing Manager for Finell, mentioned the line won the Best New Collection in the Accent on Design showcase at February's NY Now trade show. Finell will exhibit again at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair at the Javits Center in May.
