The Dutch made a strong showing throughout Milan this year, including in Zona Tortona where a loose collective headed up by Frederik Roijé is returning alongside Tuttobene and Moooi to represent of a range of Dutch design from independent studios to major brands. The factually titled "Dutch at Savona 33" features four brands that fall somewhere in between: Roijé's eponymous studio; New Duivendrecht, the brand he co-founded with Victor Le Noble; DUM, returning this year; and Quodes, whom they've added to their ranks this year.
Along with the "Smokestack," which debuted last year and has reportedly been selling briskly (or at least as well as a COR-TEN steel chimney might sell), Roijé launched several new products, including the "Texture Tray," which was inspired by hatching/crosshatching, and the "Treasure Table" (below).
Meanwhile, the "Cloud Cabinet" is intended to complement the "Storylines" and "Guidelines" series of book shelves and magazine racks.
Once again, New Duivendrecht (co-founded by Roijé and Victor Le Noble) made a strong showing with a few new pieces that nicely complement their existing collections. The new "Polar" lamp by Dave Keune, which comes in floor lamp and pendant versions, and "Hensen" Chair by Kranen/Gille were displayed alongside the Roijé-designed "Slice" Chair and "Clew" pouf by Sjoerd Jonkers.
The new collection consists of several new pendant options, including the "Thruster" lamp in the photos at top and above (reflected in the "Lazy Mirror" by Frederike Top), as well as the "Flourish" lamp below, which features a special copper-fiber felt shade.
Amsterdam-based brand Quodes launched several new pieces, as well as iterative updates to existing collections by Barber Osgerby, Alfredo Häberli and Nendo. The "Collar" cabinet series (above) by the latter features a subtle convex radius on its outer edges; the afternoon light happened to strike the Häberli-designed combination valet/nightstand to nice effect.
Lastly, it should come as no surprise that DUM Design's "Shift" pendant lamp was inspired by architecture: it's a very explicit homage to the SANAA-designed New Museum.
