"Irresistible!" delivers more than 200 pages of strategic discussion and insight for professionals involved in the engineering, product development, marketing and management of consumer electronics, with a focus on current industry trends and areas of growth.
"The major trend in the consumer electronics industry in 2006 will not be a new device or service but the emergence of companies in search of Meta-Value," said Bailey. "Combining new technologies with accessories, services, and content to provide simple but complete solutions will transform the industry."
Smells like design thinking and innovation under a new name to me, to design a full service model around a new product a la the iPod and iTunes. Book Abstract after the gap.Abstract: Irresistible electronics, turbulent times
Consumer electronics (CE) companies face exploding demand as consumers clamor for the next great gadget or device. Despite rapid revenue expansion, however, CE companies have not captured the margins of a hot growth industry. How can the CE industry respond to a lack of real profits during this period of rapid growth and adoption of innovative technology?
Clearly, traditional business models are not adequate-success will require a new set of strategies. Three M's represent the critical elements contributing to growth and innovation: Meta-value, models and markets. Meta-value is the idea that the convergence and integration of technologies, devices, services and content go beyond synergy. New models for doing business can strengthen both customer and partner relationships while helping CE companies focus on core differentiators. And finally, opportunities are being fueled by new geographic markets, like Brazil, Russia, India and China. Across the globe, the IBM team is working with leading CE companies to develop the new business models that can excel in today’s industry landscape.
