Who didn't love field trips in grade school? They were a refreshing departure from the sit-down-and-listen-up modus operandi of most curriculums and offered the excitement of socializing en route. We don't think such fun has to stop because we're all "professionals" now, so we added three design-centric Field Trips to the 2015 Core77 Conference experience, happening this October 22nd through the 24th in Los Angeles, CA.
These three exclusive field trips are all about visiting design where it lives. We'll take small groups of conference attendees to see where some of the most interesting design innovation is happening today in L.A. Your first option is the WET tour where you'll get to a behind-the-scenes look at how some of the world's most incredible fountains and water effects are made (think of the fountain show at the Bellagio in Las Vegas... That's this team!) The WET workshop is known for its unique blend of talent; chemists, optical engineers, illustrators, textile designers, Ph.D.s, landscape designers and special effects pros all take credit for WET's gorgeous displays.
Next is the Downtown L.A. Walking Tour, led by Gizmodo's Alissa Walker, a self-described "writer, gelato-eater and walker." As the Urbanism editor at Gizmodo, and a writer and speaker about design, architecture, cities, transportation and walking, you'll be in good hands to explore the unique character and architecture that makes downtown L.A. so cool.
The last field trip is the Art of Corita Kent Tour, Someday is Now, which takes you to the Pasadena Museum of Californian Art for the first full-scale exhibition to survey the entire career of this pioneering artist and designer. Michael Duncan—a critic and co-curator of this exhibition—will take you on a private tour through Kent's vibrant, Pop-inspired prints from the 1960s. This eye opening work mined a variety of secular and religious sources and used the populist printmaking medium to pose philosophical questions about racism, war, poverty, and religion. In other words, it's not to be missed.
So how do you get in on one of these field trips? First, get your Core77 Conference ticket here, then add on the field trip you're most excited about. Unfortunately you can only sign up for one because they're all happening at the same time but no matter which one you go with, you won't be disappointed.
