Wal-Mart has implemented a scorecard system that enables manufacturers to evaluate their current packaging choices. Scoring categories include greenhouse gas emissions produced per ton of packaging, raw material use, packaging size, recycled content, material recovery value, renewable energy use, transportation impacts, and innovation. 2008 will mark the year Wal-Mart begins to use the scores for decision-making, hopefully reducing packaging used by suppliers by 5% by 2013.
